How Igbo Women Can Tackle Child Abuse Issues at the August Gathering
I have been reflecting on ways to ensure our August meeting addresses pressing community issues. I am not making an ethnic generalization, but I’ve observed that many child abuse reports involve harm to domestic workers by women from the East. This trend worries me, and we must confront the reality openly. Out of ten cases I’ve seen, eight or nine involve maids suffering grievous harm. I find it hard to believe Igbo women intend cruelty toward children in their care. It also troubles me that their spouses often remain silent when abuse occurs. I propose that this year’s gathering includes a dedicated session on child welfare and proper caregiving practices. Those found guilty of mistreatment should face community sanctions. Such measures will deter future abuse and promote stronger, more compassionate families.
