John Sterling: The Voice of the Yankees – Life, Career and Legacy
John Sterling (born John Sloss; 1938–2026) spent 35 years as the radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees. He called over 5,000 consecutive games, covered eight World Series and won 12 Sports Emmy Awards. Beginning his career in New York and Baltimore, Sterling also lent his voice to NBA, ABA, NHL and college football broadcasts. He joined the Yankees in 1989 and became known for his unique home-run calls and loyal dedication behind the mic. Off air, Sterling lived in New Jersey, raised four children and overcame health scares, including a hospital stay for a blood infection and a heart attack. He passed away on May 4, 2026, at age 87, leaving behind a lasting broadcasting legacy.
