Abia Labour Party Unites Behind Peter Azubuike as New State Chairman

Abia Labour Party Unites Behind Peter Azubuike as New State Chairman

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party held its State Congress in Umuahia on April 25, 2026. Delegates adopted a consensus arrangement to elect a full State Working Committee led by Peter Azubuike as Chairman. Chucks Akamadu was named State Secretary, Ben Otti Organising Secretary, and Emenike Iroegbu Publicity Secretary. Governor Alex Otti praised members for their unity and maturity during the orderly process and pledged government support for a smooth transition. The governor also commended outgoing Acting Chairman Emmanuel Otti for stabilising the party and urged his continued commitment. He described the congress as a fresh start, calling on everyone to pull together in one direction. In his acceptance speech, Azubuike thanked delegates for their confidence. He vowed to strengthen party structures across Abia and leverage the governor’s popularity to secure victories in the 2027 general elections.

It's interesting that they settled on a full working committee so quickly after the congress in Umuahia.

I'm not convinced a consensus setup guarantees real representation if grassroots voices weren't heard.

To ensure unity, the new chairman should host listening sessions in each local government area before major decisions.
