INEC: Police Must Lead Election Security, Military Role Should Be Exceptional

INEC has restated that the Nigeria Police Force is the lead agency for election security, while military deployment should be limited to exceptional situations that require support for civil authorities. The commission’s chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, stated this at a seminar on election security and civil-military relations in Abuja. He said the Armed Forces must play a supportive and protective role, not a supervisory or political one. INEC also pledged to conduct transparent and inclusive elections in line with the Constitution and Electoral Act. It said election security must protect the rights and dignity of all voters, including persons with disabilities, elderly people and other vulnerable groups.
