How Digital Tools are Revolutionizing Humanitarian Aid for Nigeria’s Displaced
Deputy UN Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has reaffirmed the UN’s support for Nigerian-led solutions to development and humanitarian challenges. During her recent visits to Zamfara and Benue states, she met communities affected by insecurity and displacement. The UN highlights the growing role of digital tools in tracking internally displaced persons and shaping response efforts across Nigeria. The country now uses the Displacement Tracking Matrix from the International Organisation for Migration to improve data and inform aid delivery. Despite these advances, digital inequality, data privacy risks, and misinformation remain major hurdles in ensuring vulnerable populations benefit fully. At the UN Commission on Population and Development, Secretary-General António Guterres warned that declining global funding for development programmes threatens progress toward sustainable development goals. He called for stronger and more predictable financing to support vulnerable countries, including Nigeria.
