Why Football Is So Cruel: Portugal Survives Croatia on Controversial Calls
Sir Alex Ferguson once cried “Football: Bloody Hell!” after Manchester United’s last-gasp UCL win in 1999. Early this morning, football produced another “bloody hell” moment. I support England and Portugal and I’m a huge Ronaldo fan. But today Croatia dominated and deserved to win. VAR and the referee decided otherwise. Ronaldo’s penalty was dubious, and Ramos’s equaliser felt conjured out of nothing. Croatia should hold their heads high. They were the better side. Portugal were lucky to progress. If they don’t up their game, Spain could embarrass them in the next round. Football can be so cruel. Croatia did their nation proud. May luck favour them next time.
