Landmark Ruling: Court Strikes Down National Assembly’s N110bn SUV and Allowance Package

Landmark Ruling: Court Strikes Down National Assembly’s N110bn SUV and Allowance Package

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled the National Assembly’s N110 billion expenditure on vehicles and support allowances unlawful. Justice Yellim Bogoro found that N40 billion for 465 SUVs and N70 billion in allowances breached procurement rules and public accountability. The suit by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project challenged the spending amid Nigeria’s economic hardship. The judge described the arrangement as self-dealing, noting lawmakers both approved and benefited from the funds. The court ordered the Senate President and Speaker to ensure all future purchases follow due process, transparency and value-for-money principles. It also dismissed objections about the plaintiff’s standing and claims that the funds were already spent. Advocacy groups and human rights lawyers have welcomed the decision as a victory for transparency. They urged prompt implementation of the judgment and called on officials to prioritise public interest in managing state resources.

Local watchdog groups should use this verdict to demand clearer procurement guidelines and regular audits for public expenditures.
