Nigeria Police Dismisses and Charges Officers in Rivers State Corruption Crackdown
The Nigeria Police Force has stepped up internal cleansing by dismissing, arresting and prosecuting personnel involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, extortion and other abuses in Rivers State. Investigations uncovered a criminal syndicate at Zone 16 Headquarters, Yenagoa. Three serving inspectors were arrested for abducting victims during unlawful patrols, stealing from their bank and cryptocurrency accounts and extorting millions of naira. Vehicles and over ₦7.3 million linked to the operation were recovered. A separate inquiry revealed another group of officers in the Rivers Command who routinely abducted citizens, seized valuables and forced unlawful transfers from bank and crypto wallets. Five inspectors were dismissed and their cases have been referred for prosecution. The Force urges the public to continue reporting police misconduct through official channels. It says it remains committed to transparent, accountable and service-driven policing under the rule of law.
