Onitsha South Council Accuses Police of Undermining Homeland Security Law Over Firearms Arraignment
Onitsha South Local Government has condemned the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 13 Ukpo, for arresting three Agunechemba security operatives, including their commander, Mr Echezona Joseph Ezeonyejekwe, for alleged illegal possession of firearms before the Federal High Court in Awka. In a statement, the Council Secretary described the arrests as inconsistent with the Anambra State Homeland Security Law. He argued that the operatives were state employees legally deployed to protect the Council’s Fire Service Station in Fegge, Onitsha, and were not informed of charges until the day of their arraignment. The Police charged the men with unlawful possession of three pump-action rifles and conspiracy to damage property worth ₦700 million. Their bail application was opposed by the prosecuting counsel and they remain remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre. The Council has urged relevant authorities to investigate the matter and ensure respect for local government autonomy and the state’s community security framework.
