Inside Tinubu Stockholm Syndrome: When Supporters Ignore Failures

There is a syndrome spreading among Tinubu’s supporters: Tinubu Stockholm Syndrome. Once afflicted, logic bends, failures become excuses and criticism is dismissed as hatred. Instead of asking if Nigerians are better off, sufferers ask how to defend every hardship. Some also have Tinubu Excuse Disorder. When prices rise, it’s global or inherited. When insecurity spikes, it’s historical. Responsibility is always shifted, outcomes are ignored and explanations manufactured. Before 2023, supporters praised Tinubu’s Lagos record and believed he would assemble the best minds. Today, they explain away inflation, insecurity and a weak naira. Every critique is framed as tribal or treasonous. True critics hold leaders accountable. But Tinubu Stockholm Syndrome makes admitting failure feel like personal defeat. To an infected mind, Tinubu can never be wrong.
