U.S. Embassy in Abuja Halts Visa Appointments Amid Security Alert

U.S. Embassy in Abuja Halts Visa Appointments Amid Security Alert

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has suspended all visa appointments at its Abuja embassy. Applicants are advised to check their emails for updates on rescheduled interview dates. Visa services at the U.S. Consulate in Lagos remain unchanged. Emergency and appointment-based services for American citizens continue at both posts. This decision follows a new security advisory that ordered non-essential staff departures from Abuja. The U.S. also added five states to its “Do Not Travel” list while maintaining a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” rating for Nigeria due to crime, unrest and limited medical facilities.

Given this sudden halt in Abuja visas, what alternatives should applicants consider to avoid travel disruptions?

Are you sure other embassies still have slots, and have you checked which ones are processing visas?

I agree it makes sense to explore regional embassies, but I'm not too convinced they have enough slots soon.

Tempted to think they overreacted here, using broad suspension instead of targeted measures feels heavy handed.

Anyone stranded can pivot to the Lagos consulate for standard visas or reach out through emergency appointment channels until Abuja resumes services.
