Catholic Bishops Urge Tinubu to Act on Insecurity, Hardship and Credible 2027 Elections
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has urged President Bola Tinubu to take stronger action on insecurity, economic hardship, credible elections and the protection of citizens’ constitutional rights. During a courtesy visit to the President on 28 July 2026, the bishops commended the student loan scheme and the release of kidnapped schoolchildren in Oyo State. However, they warned that insecurity, poor electricity supply, bad roads and rising hardship continue to cause pain for many Nigerians. The conference called for fair political competition, improved funding for INEC and transparent elections in 2027. It also asked the Federal Government to address concerns over equal religious freedom, including access to land for churches, and to consider returning mission schools to their original owners. The bishops further appealed for an official invitation to Pope Leo XIV to visit Nigeria, saying greater collaboration between the Church and the state could support peace, justice and national development.
