Global Liveability Index 2026: Lagos Ranks Among Bottom 10 Cities Worldwide

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2026 Global Liveability Index evaluated 173 cities on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Four African capitals featured in the bottom 10. Tripoli was the lowest-rated African city at 172nd with a score of 41. Lagos placed 168th, scoring 44 overall, weighed down by a stability score of 30 and healthcare score of 38 despite stronger infrastructure performance (54). Harare (165th) and Algiers (169th) also landed in the global bottom ten. Other cities on the list include Tehran, Kyiv, Port Moresby, Karachi, and Dhaka, with Damascus ranking last among all 173 cities. The report highlights how conflict, political instability, rapid population growth, and pressure on public services continue to undermine quality of life in many world cities.
