IG Disu Orders Police to Act Decisively Against Illegal Firearm Carriers

IG Disu Orders Police to Act Decisively Against Illegal Firearm Carriers

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has directed officers to respond decisively to people carrying illegal firearms, citing Force Order 237 and the continued killing of security personnel. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, on July 24, Disu said only authorised security personnel may carry firearms. He said officers have been trained on when to use their weapons and do not need to wait for further instructions when facing armed threats. The police chief said the directive is part of efforts to curb persistent violence in Benue. He also urged residents to give security agencies credible information that could help prevent attacks and apprehend armed suspects.

What safeguards will ensure this directive targets illegal firearm carriers without putting lawful citizens or bystanders at risk?

Exactly, decisive action should still come with clear checks so innocent people do not get caught in the net.

The continued killing of security personnel makes the concern urgent, especially when the police are discussing it directly with stakeholders in Benue.

Decisive action sounds necessary, but Force Order 237 should not become a shortcut for avoiding accountability when force is used.

Clear identification checks, proper documentation, and prompt investigation of every firearm-related incident would make enforcement more credible.
