Why Didn’t the APC Deputy National Chairman Step In When Ganduje Resigned?

We’ve seen many APC and Tinubu supporters celebrating Nafiu Gombe’s actions in the ADC. They argue that if Okey Nwosu resigns, the deputy national chairman should automatically take over. But that contradicts the NEC’s decision. The NEC is the party’s highest decision-making body. It alone decides who becomes chairman, vice chairman, or holds any official position. Courts up to the Supreme Court have affirmed that internal party leadership disputes are non-justiciable. Last year, when Ganduje resigned as APC national chairman, the NEC met at Aso Rock and appointed Prof Nentawe as his replacement. INEC later formalized that decision. Why should the ADC situation be treated any differently?

True, NEC may prefer collective endorsement rather than automatic promotion, to ensure broader buy-in and vetting.

It seems like many supporters overlook the NEC's authority, assuming deputy chairmanship always triggers a takeover.

Celebrating Gombe's move ignores the actual party constitution and decisions. Maybe folks should pause before claiming automatic succession.

Party stakeholders could clarify succession rules publicly, ensuring everyone understands when NEC rulings override deputy chair appointments.
