SERAP Gives Tinubu 48-Hour Deadline to Withdraw NBC’s Broadcast Notice
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged President Tinubu to intervene in the National Broadcasting Commission’s directive, calling it unlawful and a threat to press freedom. In a letter dated April 18, 2026, SERAP warned that the NBC’s notice imposes prior censorship by restricting personal opinions and criminalising vague offences like “bullying” and “intimidation.” The group said these rules conflict with the Constitution and international human rights obligations. SERAP demands that the Federal Government and the Information Minister revoke the Formal Notice within 48 hours or face legal action. It cautioned that the directive could chill critical reporting and undermine media diversity ahead of the 2027 elections.
