GAHTO Rescues Three Trafficking Victims from Mali as Plateau Government Raises Alarm
The Plateau State Government has warned that economic hardship and deceptive job offers are fueling a rise in human trafficking across West Africa. The Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organisation (GAHTO) recently rescued three young women—two from Plateau and one from Delta State—and handed them over for rehabilitation and reintegration. The victims described how false promises of legitimate employment led them to Mali, where they were forced into prostitution, denied proper meals and threatened until they “repaid” alleged debts. Their accounts highlight the tactics traffickers use to prey on vulnerable Nigerians seeking better opportunities. Officials from the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission and GAHTO called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, law enforcement and civil society. They stressed that prevention through public enlightenment in all 17 local government areas remains a top priority, alongside rescue operations, counselling and empowerment programmes for survivors.
