NUC Clarifies Honorary Doctorates vs Academic ‘Dr.’ Titles
The title “Dr.” has become blurred by casual use and honorary awards. Many now question its real meaning and value. The National Universities Commission has stepped in to restore clarity. It states that only those who complete doctoral research may use “Dr.” as a prefix. Honorary degree holders should list their honour after their name (for example, Jane Doe, D.Litt (Honoris Causa)). This move protects academic standards and respects the years of study behind an earned doctorate. It also preserves the honour of recognising societal contributions separately. For this directive to succeed, universities, professional bodies, and the media must apply it consistently. Only then will the distinction be more than symbolic.
