Kano Co-wife Arrested After Setting Husband, Co-wife and Children Ablaze
Police in Kano have arrested 32-year-old Maryam Usman for allegedly pouring petrol on her co-wife, Firdausi Saminu (40), her husband Saminu Miko, and two children before setting them on fire at Mangwarori Quarters, Mariri. The victims—including Firdausi, her five-year-old daughter Khadija, three-year-old son Ismail, and Saminu Miko—were evacuated to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital for treatment. Their father also sustained burns while trying to rescue them. A relative said the attack occurred around 3 a.m., just days after Firdausi moved into the home with her children from a previous marriage. Maryam Usman was arrested at the scene by operatives from the Mariri Division under orders from the state Commissioner of Police. The Kano State Police Command confirmed the arrest and announced that exhibits have been recovered. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Bompai, for further investigation and possible charges of mischief by fire and attempted culpable homicide. Authorities have urged families to resolve domestic disputes peacefully, report early signs of conflict, and secure homes against fire hazards. The police pledged to support the victims and ensure a thorough and timely legal process.
