Sule Urges National Assembly to Ban Almajiri System to Curb Insecurity
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has called on the National Assembly to permanently outlaw the Almajiri system across Northern Nigeria. He argues the practice drives the region’s growing out-of-school population and fuels insecurity. Speaking at a human capital summit in Abuja, Governor Sule warned that many minors recruited into banditry emerge from the Almajiri fold. He cited data showing Almajiri children comprise 72% to 81% of Nigeria’s out-of-school youth. Recalling the 2020 mass repatriation of Almajiri children by Nasarawa and Kaduna States, he stressed that any enforcement must include alternatives such as mandatory formal education and skills training. The governor urged Northern leaders to turn summit resolutions into draft bills, insisting that policy reforms are essential to overcoming regional poverty and restoring security.
