SERAP Demands N110bn Refund from Akpabio and Abbas in Seven-Day Ultimatum
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas seven days to recover N110 billion spent on vehicle procurement and support allowances, recently ruled unlawful by a Federal High Court. The court found that N40 billion on 465 official vehicles and N70 billion in support allowances for new lawmakers breached procurement laws and constitutional duties. SERAP’s deputy director argued the judgment, together with anti-corruption laws and Nigeria’s human rights commitments, provides a clear basis for immediate restitution. Beyond the refund, SERAP urged the National Assembly to enforce strict procurement compliance, hold public budget hearings each cycle, and publish detailed expenditure reports to improve transparency and citizen oversight. SERAP warned that failure to act within the week will prompt legal action to recover the funds, emphasizing that allowing lawmakers to keep benefits declared unlawful would erode the rule of law and public trust in democratic institutions.
