The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards isn’t just about trophies. It doubles as a full fashion spectacle. Last year’s 11th edition turned the red carpet into a living garden. Doyin David stunned in a tree dress by Mamadi Couture. Osas Ighodaro embodied Mother Nature in a gown by Veekee James. Mercy Eke shone in a crystal-encrusted Water and Diamond look by Amy Aghomi. Mercy Aigbe appeared as the sun, moon and stars, while Diiadem, Jenny Frank and Ashmusy brought floral and butterfly-inspired designs. Behind the stars were standout Nigerian designers. Veekee James, Mamadi Couture and Erica Moore Brand each dressed multiple celebrities. Toyin Lawani even crafted a jaw-dropping safety-pin gown. Accessories stole plenty of attention too. From duckling purses and saucer hats to bejewelled headpieces and elegant hand fans, the details deserved their own award category. Soft, natural makeup kept every look effortlessly chic.

The earthy gowns did stand out, but some looks felt more staged than authentically inspired by nature.

I'm not convinced that layering leaves and branches makes a dress any more artistic than a well-cut gown.

Choosing sustainable materials for a nature-themed look takes careful sourcing and budget planning, but it can make red carpet fashion more ethical.
