INEC Commissioner Warns 2027 Election Budget Still Unreleased, Preparations Underway

INEC Commissioner Warns 2027 Election Budget Still Unreleased, Preparations Underway

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has not yet received its N873.78 billion budget for the 2027 general elections. Early-stage planning, including procurement of new accreditation devices, is moving ahead despite the delay. INEC’s National Commissioner for Voter Education and Publicity shared the funding gap at a recent Abuja session with political parties, civil society groups, and election officials. He noted that the Electoral Act requires funds to be released at least six months before the polls. To avoid a repeat of 2023 result‐portal glitches, the commission will run mock presidential elections to test its technology. Officials are also replacing lost or damaged BVAS devices, having just returned from procurement talks in China. The commissioner urged Nigerians to consider the average cost per voter—about six dollars—when judging the overall budget. He also warned that last‐minute court injunctions can disrupt software configurations and printing of final result sheets.

Ordering new accreditation devices without released funds fit crash plans hard if INEC never gets that budget in time.

But maybe they should pause device procurement until the budget lands, instead of risking aborted plans if funds never arrive.

To avoid last-minute hiccups, INEC could set interim procurement guidelines and secure budgetary commitments from the finance ministry now.
