Atiku Slams Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, Warns of Unbearable Cost of Living

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, accusing him of distorting Nigeria’s reform history. In a statement, Atiku argued that relentless inflation is forcing families to skip meals and businesses to close. He described the President’s recent remarks as a “reckless tirade” that exposes “hypocrisy and historical amnesia.” Atiku criticised the opaque commercialisation of the national oil company, calling it “privatisation without accountability.” He contrasted this with his own record, citing successful sales of NNPC refineries to credible investors under his watch. He also took aim at Tinubu’s education claims, accusing him of misreading reform records and mocking a so-called degree discrepancy. According to Atiku, real reform requires transparency and courage, not mockery.

What kind of evidence would help us judge if families are really skipping meals due to the reforms?

Do we have independent evidence that families are missing meals, or is this rhetoric?

I'm not convinced that past administrations handled inflation any better; this criticism feels like political point-scoring.

Perhaps focusing on local food production and supply chain improvements could help moderate inflation and ease cost-of-living pressures.
