Ebonyi Activists Vow “No Light, No Campaigns” Ahead of 2027 Elections
A coalition of civil rights groups in Afikpo/Edda federal constituency is demanding the restoration of electricity in Afikpo before any campaign activities begin in next year’s general election. The groups — Afikpo Intelligentsia in the Diaspora (AID), Restore Afikpo Light Campaigners Abroad, and Odinma Afikpo Group — say representatives, including incumbent Federal Lawmaker Chief Iduma Igariwey and Deputy Governor Princess Patricia Obila, must use their constitutional powers to secure power supply for the community. They argue that the 1999 Constitution, the Electricity Act 2023 and its 2025 amendment empower lawmakers to force federal agencies into action. The coalition recalls that in 2020, Igariwey summoned the Transmission Company of Nigeria to a public hearing but has yet to follow up on over 20 years of darkness in his Ehugbo community. The activists insist that motions of urgent public importance, budget line items for the Amasiri–Afikpo transmission line and petitions to the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Rural Electrification Agency should have been pursued. They warn that without concrete action to light up Afikpo, no candidate will be welcome to campaign there in 2027, insisting power restoration is a non-negotiable prerequisite.
