Ogun’s 4th Annual Women’s Run to Welcome Over 1,000 Participants

Over 1,000 women will lace up on Saturday, 11 April 2026, for the fourth edition of the 5-kilometre Ogun Women Run in Abeokuta. Project Manager Emmanuel Odeh says the event aims to help market women and others balancing daily work to prioritize health and fitness. First prize is ₦500,000, with second and third prizes of ₦300,000 and ₦200,000 respectively. The race will start at Sapon by 8 a.m. and finish at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, where winners will receive medals and cash awards. Mrs Yetunde Johnson of Brussels Sports Management Limited thanked the National Sports Commission, sponsors, and the state government for ensuring smooth arrangements. Commissioner for Sports Development Wasiu Isiaka, represented by Acting Director Seyi Sonde, urged continued public–private collaboration to boost women’s participation in sports and fitness across the state.

How do organizers plan to support market women juggling stalls and a 5K run? I'm curious about strategies for balancing work and training.

I agree, offering flexible training times and rest areas near stalls would really help market women juggle work and a 5K run.

Who else besides organizers did you expect to handle market logistics for women balancing stalls and training?

A thousand participants is impressive, but sponsorships and local infrastructure in Abeokuta need scrutiny if this run is to really boost fitness levels.

It's great to promote health, yet I wonder if a 5K race truly addresses the daily challenges market women face.

Providing free morning stretching sessions at marketplaces could ease participants into the event and improve attendance without major extra costs.
