Almajiri Commission’s Budget: How Road Projects Expose Fiscal Absurdity
The 2026 budget allocates N8.4 billion to the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education for road construction in Ogun, Katsina and Ekiti states, along with ambulances, dental equipment, solar street lights and empowerment tools. None of these projects align with the commission’s mandate to expand access to education for vulnerable children. This blatant mandate distortion reflects a deeper problem: constituency projects being inserted into unrelated agencies. Instead of funding classrooms, teacher training and learning materials, billions are siphoned into works, health and power initiatives that finance political patronage rather than educational outcomes. For Nigeria’s budget to serve national priorities, constituency projects must be transparently costed, strictly matched to agency responsibilities and rigorously overseen by the executive, legislature and anti-corruption bodies. Without these reforms, fiscal accountability will remain an illusion and critical resources will continue to be wasted.
