Nigerian Undertrial in Indian Jail Dies After Cardiac Arrest — 1 of 5
1 / 5

A 66-year-old Nigerian national, identified as Solomon, has died in an Indian prison hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was held as an undertrial prisoner at Gautam Budh Nagar District Jail under the NDPS Act since May 2023. Solomon had chronic conditions including high blood pressure and severe kidney disease. On April 6, he experienced sudden breathing difficulties inside the jail and was rushed to GIMS Hospital in Greater Noida, where he was pronounced dead. Police say legal formalities are under way to determine the exact cause of death. The prison administration and hospital authorities have notified his family and relevant agencies. Solomon was among ten foreign nationals arrested during a May 2023 anti-narcotics operation in Greater Noida. Authorities recovered cocaine, MDMA and raw chemicals at a suspected drug manufacturing site.

While prison systems often fail, we shouldn't assume authorities had no idea of his frail health without proof of their negligence.
