Fayemi Blames Governments for Nigeria’s ‘Tourism Graveyard’ of Abandoned Projects
Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has warned that Nigeria’s tourism sector is collapsing not for lack of ideas but because successive administrations fail to sustain projects after leaving office. Speaking at an international tourism summit hosted by Oyo State, he said brilliant initiatives across the country die whenever a new government takes over. He described Nigeria’s “tourism graveyard” as full of untapped ideas that were never properly institutionalised. Fayemi stressed that sustainable tourism requires policies and institutions strong enough to survive political transitions. He recalled that when he became governor in 2010, Ekiti State had only two operating hotels despite major attractions like Ikogosi Warm Springs and Arinta Waterfalls. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also announced a 15-year concession for Bower’s Tower to boost private-sector participation. Their comments have reignited debate online: why do government projects in Nigeria vanish with each administration?
