Qatar’s Madibo Banned Five Matches for Serious Foul on Canada’s Koné

Qatar’s Madibo Banned Five Matches for Serious Foul on Canada’s Koné — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo received a straight red card in the 51st minute of the World Cup qualifier against Canada. FIFA’s disciplinary committee has handed him a five-game suspension for serious foul play. The decision is subject to appeal. Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné was tackled from behind and suffered fractures to his tibia and fibula. He was stretchered off and later underwent surgery on his left leg. Canada still secured a 6-0 win, their first at a World Cup, but the victory was marred by Koné’s injury. Madibo was visibly upset and apologized to Koné after the match. Qatar were eliminated from the tournament following their final group loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Five games seems harsh for a straight red, but serious foul play indeed demands strong measures to protect players.

I think five matches actually fit the risk. Serious tackles like that can end careers if unchecked.

I'm not convinced a player suspension alone can deter reckless tackles; consistent referee decisions during games matter more in my view.

Teams should train midfielders on safer tackling techniques and appeal promptly if they believe the punishment was excessive.
