Residents of Umudimishi Quarters in Umuoru Uga, Aguata LGA of Anambra State, have appealed for urgent government intervention over alleged illegal sand mining and worsening gully erosion. Community leaders claim that about 15 people have died in incidents linked to mining sites, while more than 200 buildings are at risk. They fear that up to 70 homes could be lost within months if the erosion continues unchecked. Residents also allege that heavy-duty trucks transporting sand have damaged newly constructed roads. They called on the Anambra State Government to investigate the mining operations, assess the environmental damage and protect affected homes, roads and residents. The state government had previously announced restrictions on sand excavation in parts of Aguata, Orumba North and Orumba South due to erosion concerns.
