Rúben Neves: ‘I Still Send WhatsApp Messages to My Late Friend Diogo Jota’

Rúben Neves: ‘I Still Send WhatsApp Messages to My Late Friend Diogo Jota’ — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Portugal midfielder Rúben Neves revealed on SIC’s Alta Definição that he keeps a WhatsApp group open with Diogo Jota’s account and the late forward’s widow, Rute Cardoso. Neves said he archives conversations so he can continue sending messages whenever something special happens. He described the day after Jota’s death as the hardest of his life. Diogo Jota died in July 2025, aged 28, after a car crash in Spain that also claimed his brother’s life. Teammates have continued honouring his memory, including wearing commemorative wristbands bearing his name before the World Cup.

He archives old Jota chats and still sends messages as if nothing changed, showing how strong their bond remains.

Isn't it possible he's holding onto grief rather than simply celebrating their bond?

Maybe teammates or family could suggest creating a physical journal instead of a chat, to honour memories without digital reminders.
