Deadly Xenophobic Attacks in Mossel Bay Kill Five Mozambicans as Repatriation Begins

Over the weekend, South Africa saw deadly xenophobic violence in Mossel Bay that claimed five Mozambican lives, the government office confirmed. Officials reported that seven citizens died total — five in the attacks and two in a road accident while travelling home. About 800 Mozambicans were caught up in Friday’s unrest. Some 300 nationals made their own way back on Saturday. More than 500 have been sheltered in Western Cape and are now being officially repatriated to Mozambique. Local authorities have opened investigations following reports of murders, arson and displacement.
