Sharafa Alli’s Coronation as Oba Bars Him from Politics, Says Niyi Akintola SAN — 1 of 2

Chief Niyi Akintola SAN has clarified that the recent elevation of Ibadan’s new kings was fully lawful. He said the absence of the monarchs at the ceremony does not invalidate the event, as each had formally requested promotion and the government approved it. He explained that Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, the Balogun Olubadan, and the deputy governor represented the Olubadan and the governor. Their presence, he added, confirms that the coronation met all legal requirements. Niyi Akintola reminded the public that once crowned, each king assumes the title His Royal Highness. He noted that Ibadan’s cultural tradition bars Obas from active politics, citing how it once applied to the late High Chief Adedibu. He urged critics to research these customs before commenting.
