High Court Rejects El-Rufai’s Bail Bid, Flags Flight Risk and Probe Interference
The Kaduna State High Court on April 21 refused Nasir el-Rufai’s bail application, ruling that he must remain in custody pending trial. Justice Darius Khobo held that el-Rufai poses a flight risk and may interfere with ongoing investigations into co-suspects. El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to nine counts of alleged benefit under false pretences and misappropriation of loan funds. His team argued non-capital offences, health concerns, and strong community ties, but failed to submit medical evidence or counter the prosecution’s claims. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) opposed bail, citing the risk of evidence tampering and witness intimidation. The court ordered the trial to start on a day-to-day basis from June 1 to 4, 2026.
