Chinney Love Laments the Stress and Exhaustion of Igbo Burial Rites

Nigerian filmmaker Chinney Love has shared her frustration with the demands of organizing Igbo burial ceremonies in the East. In a recent Instagram video, she explained how these rites can leave children sick and drained at a time when they should be grieving. She questioned why culture seems to encourage displays of power during someone’s most vulnerable moments. She admitted feeling “sick, frustrated, angry, tired and just generally fed up” after struggling through the traditional requirements to lay her mother to rest. Chinney warned that the stress may even deter people from returning their loved ones’ bodies to their villages. Weeks earlier, she announced her mother’s passing and marked her first posthumous birthday by recalling how strange it feels not to call her on that day.

We might be unfairly blaming cultural rites. Some families find real strength in these gatherings, not just burden and exhaustion.

Perhaps setting a clear budget and task list could ease planning stress, allowing children time to rest and families to grieve properly.
