Abia Governor Seeks JCI Certification for Three Major State Hospitals

Abia Governor Seeks JCI Certification for Three Major State Hospitals

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has set a goal to secure Joint Commission International accreditation for three flagship hospitals in the state. The facilities—ABSUTH, Amachara Specialist Hospital and Umunnato Specialist Hospital—are undergoing extensive upgrades in infrastructure and equipment. Otti spoke with the JCI managing director, Clare Omatseye, during a briefing on reconstruction progress. He praised the work done so far and directed that all documentation be completed without delay to meet accreditation requirements. The governor also announced leadership restructuring at ABSUTH to boost efficiency. Advanced radiography services will be centralized there, while Amachara and Umunnato will operate as specialist referral centres. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has pledged a $1 million MRI unit for ABSUTH. Observers say achieving JCI status would position Abia among Africa’s top healthcare providers.

Certification is exciting, but shouldn't we focus first on reliable power and staff training before labels?

It's encouraging to see infrastructure improvements, but past projects here have faced delays and budget overruns before accreditation goals are achieved.

To sustain the accreditation, they should train local staff on continuous quality audits and schedule regular maintenance checks.
