From Skills to Startups: Sobowale Urges UNIOSUN Students to Turn Ideas into Profit

From Skills to Startups: Sobowale Urges UNIOSUN Students to Turn Ideas into Profit

At the UNIOSUN training launch, Dr Dayo Sobowale explained why mastering a craft differs from being an entrepreneur. He defined entrepreneurship as the process of transforming ideas into profitable ventures, even if you hire others to carry out the work. Sobowale argued that having an idea and plan is more valuable than technical skill alone. He warned that Nigeria risks remaining a consumer nation without a stronger focus on innovation and wealth creation. In his remarks, UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor Prof Odunayo Clement Adebooye encouraged students to use technology and problem-solving mindsets to drive economic growth. He highlighted the university’s automated palm oil and garri plants as examples of homegrown innovation. The ceremony featured entrepreneurship mentors and local business leaders who urged participants to spend their time developing practical ideas. The key message was clear: become producers, not just consumers.

Hiring others can boost output, but that still leaves the original entrepreneur responsible for coordination and customer trust, which isn't trivial.
