Artemis II Crew Prepares for Fiery Re-Entry After Historic Moon Flyby
The four Artemis II astronauts have become the first humans in over 50 years to fly around the moon. Their final major challenge is a high-speed return to Earth. U.S. astronaut Victor Glover says he’s been thinking about this “fireball” entry since April 3, 2023, when the crew was first assigned. During re-entry, their capsule will reach speeds up to 38,400 km/h and face extreme heat, protected only by a special heat shield. Communications with mission control will cut out for about six minutes. Once through the atmosphere, parachutes will slow Orion before it splashes down off the coast of San Diego. Latest weather forecasts and exterior images look favorable for a safe landing.
