Oracle Cuts 30,000 Jobs in a 6 a.m. Email

Oracle caught thousands of employees off guard with a single email sent just after 6 a.m. EST. There was no prior notice from HR or direct managers—only a brief message ending their roles and outlining severance steps. Analysts estimate the layoff will affect between 20,000 and 30,000 staff—about 18% of Oracle’s global workforce of roughly 162,000. Workers in the U.S., India, and other regions received the same termination notice under the “Oracle Leadership” banner. Teams hit hardest include Revenue and Health Sciences and SaaS and Virtual Operations Services, where cuts reached around 30%. NetSuite’s India Development Centre also saw significant reductions, with many employees forfeiting unvested stock units. These deep cuts follow Oracle’s aggressive, debt-fueled push into AI infrastructure. Experts say the layoffs will free up $8–10 billion in cash flow to help fund massive data centre expansion.

What steps can employees take to prepare for sudden mass layoffs like Oracle's, especially when there's no prior warning from HR or managers?

I hear you! Having some emergency savings and brushing up those skills ahead of time is just good common sense.

Chasing office gossip won't help much. Better to polish your skills, network quietly, and build a savings buffer.

Sending a mass layoff notice at 6 a.m. via email feels tone-deaf and detached from employees' real-world concerns.

This approach might be harsh but maybe it's better than dragging out uncertainty for weeks or even months.

Companies should establish clear severance protocols and communicate directly with teams before sending bulk layoff notices at odd hours.
