Battle at Ojukwu University: VC Extends Rival’s Suspension by Three Months

Battle at Ojukwu University: VC Extends Rival’s Suspension by Three Months

The Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Prof. Kate Omenugha, has extended Prof. Chike Osegbue’s suspension by another three months. A letter from the university registrar enforces the extension from April 14, maintaining all restrictions issued in January. Osegbue was initially suspended on January 7 for allegedly failing to teach a postgraduate course assigned to him. The extension is intended to give the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee more time to conclude its investigation. Osegbue, who was a leading candidate in the last VC selection, has challenged Omenugha’s appointment in court. He argues that the new VC did not rank among the top three candidates as required by university law.

Did the VC cite any specific rule or fresh evidence before extending Prof. Osegbue's suspension?

True, the VC probably wanted to show who calls the shots more than uphold justice.

The extension letter from the registrar simply echoes the January restrictions. It feels like procedural formality rather than resolving underlying conflicts.

Is mounting a long suspension really the best administrative tool? Perhaps more dialogue or mediation could have addressed issues faster.

The university should set clear timelines for review and public updates on Prof. Osegbue's case to avoid further speculation.
