Atiku Slams Tinubu’s $1.25bn World Bank Loan as Reckless Economic Vandalism

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said he was saddened by reports that President Bola Tinubu is seeking another $1.25 billion facility from the World Bank. He called the administration’s borrowing binge reckless, opaque and dangerously habitual. Atiku noted these funds were meant for infrastructure, power and economic recovery. Yet Nigerians still face frequent blackouts, hazardous roads, soaring energy costs and widespread hunger. He urged international lenders to demand transparency and measurable impact before extending further credit. He contrasted today’s debt trajectory with the 2005–2006 Paris Club exit, which he said was secured through fiscal discipline and diplomatic credibility. Atiku also called on the federal government to publish full details of all loans secured since May 2023, including their terms, disbursement status and project outcomes.

Blaming Tinubu for seeking World Bank funds feels a bit convenient, especially when past administrations also relied heavily on foreign loans.

To evaluate this borrowing spree, we should demand clear breakdowns of how each dollar will be spent and ensure regular public audits.
