Power Surge Destroys Two Apartments in Ilorin as Firefighters Contain Midnight Blaze
A midnight fire, suspected to have been triggered by an electrical power surge, destroyed two self-contained apartments in a residential complex opposite Metropolitan Square off Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin. The Kwara State Fire Service received a distress call at about 2:27am on Saturday. Firefighters arrived eight minutes later and brought the blaze under control by about 2:40am, stopping it from spreading to nearby apartments and an adjoining storey building. The affected property includes eight room-and-parlour self-contained units and a separate building with four-bedroom flats. Preliminary findings indicate that the surge ignited combustible materials in the affected rooms. The fire service has urged residents to install surge protectors, use standard electrical fittings, avoid overloading sockets and report fire outbreaks promptly. The incident follows another power-surge fire in a 14-room Ilorin residential building less than a week earlier.
