Lagos Gives Alaba Rago Traders 72-Hour Eviction Notice

Lagos Gives Alaba Rago Traders 72-Hour Eviction Notice

The Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Law Enforcement has issued a 72-hour eviction notice to street traders and illegal occupants along the Alaba Rago corridor of the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway ahead of a major clean-up operation. Under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the exercise will target trading on highways, walkways, medians and setbacks. Authorities plan to remove makeshift shops, mini brothels and plastic waste depots while clearing indiscriminate refuse to restore environmental order. Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele said the government carried out stakeholder sensitisation before enforcement. He urged traders to vacate the area within 72 hours to avoid confiscation of goods and prosecution under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.

Do you think displacing those traders will actually clear the corridor or just push the problem elsewhere?

Focusing on street traders alone misses how new illegal dumps and unregulated motor parks pop up right after the taskforce leaves.

Evicting traders under that notice sounds harsh; previous clean-ups never addressed why informal stalls formed there in the first place.

Perhaps the government could offer temporary relocation sites with basic facilities, then integrate those traders into a regulated market nearby.
