Proposal Urges CBN to Assess BIS Membership, Claims Nigeria Could Gain $20bn in 10 Years

Proposal Urges CBN to Assess BIS Membership, Claims Nigeria Could Gain $20bn in 10 Years

A PeacePro executive has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to assess whether Nigeria should acquire shareholding membership in the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). He argues that deeper participation could improve reserve management, foreign-exchange risk planning, banking supervision and monetary-policy capacity. He estimates that these improvements could create up to $20 billion in cumulative economic value over 10 years. He stressed that the BIS would not pay Nigeria the money directly and said the figure must first be tested through an independent cost-benefit study. The proposal calls for a CBN-led assessment team to examine membership costs, potential financial-stability gains and Nigeria’s influence in global monetary governance. It also argues that Nigeria’s entry could give West Africa greater representation in international financial discussions.

The projected $20bn gain sounds ambitious, especially since the proposal only calls for CBN to assess the membership option.

Membership may be worth studying, but shareholding alone should not be presented as a shortcut to stronger reserves or currency stability.

CBN could publish a cost-benefit assessment covering membership costs, governance implications, reserve strategy, and realistic scenarios before taking any decision.
