Four African Designers Reimagining the Table Through Culture and Craft

Four African Designers Reimagining the Table Through Culture and Craft — 1 of 2
1 / 2

African designers are transforming the everyday table into a statement of heritage, craftsmanship and modern living. Using locally sourced timber, reclaimed wood, palm, glass and raffia, these pieces bring cultural stories into homes and workspaces. Nigeria’s Salù Iwadi Studio draws on the Beninese Zangbeto masquerade for its Iroko-wood side table, while Ghanaian-French studio Helza Design incorporates an Awale game board into its communal Oware table. Both designs encourage interaction, movement and conversation. In Kenya, Savannah Space’s Maimuna Desk combines Doum palm with practical storage for a home office. Côte d’Ivoire’s Loza Malèombho and Maison Jean Marie use sculptural wood and raffia to create a dining table that celebrates Abidjan’s design culture. Together, the designs show how furniture can do more than serve a function. It can preserve tradition, inspire connection and make a home feel more personal.
