Fashion Feud: Alme Couture Claims Rights to Nana Akua Addo’s Cathedral Gown
Actress Nana Akua Addo stunned at the AMVCA in a cathedral-inspired gown attributed to Nigerian designer Mohammed Abbas. After global praise, Alme Couture stepped forward saying the dress began as their commissioned design. According to Alme Couture, Nana first approached them last year with a cathedral concept. They developed the original sketch, silhouette, structural details and couture execution before the project was cancelled and the deposit refunded. The couture house says the final gown was then produced elsewhere using their exclusive design without credit. Alme Couture insists it retains full ownership of the creative work, while acknowledging the broad cathedral theme isn’t proprietary. The dispute raises questions about design ethics, client agreements and proper acknowledgment in Africa’s growing fashion scene.
