Ekiti State Unveils Bold Green Economy Vision on International Day of Forests 2026
Ekiti State marked the 2026 International Day of Forests with a firm commitment to turning tree planting into a profitable green investment. Under the theme “Forests and Economies,” top officials led an awareness walk from Fajuyi Pavilion to the State Secretariat alongside students and environmental advocates. Keynotes from the Secretary to the State Government highlighted timber ROI statistics. A ₦200 teak seedling can grow into a ₦5,000 pole in seven years, and a ₦500 mahogany sapling may yield over ₦100,000 in 15 years. Ekiti’s Private Sector Registered Tree Growers Association has already planted more than one million trees. The Forestry Commission reported 250 hectares reforested and new control posts funded to curb illegal logging. Pilot schemes in Ilawe, Efon, and Oke Ako use economic trees as windbreakers against erosion. Partners including the Forestry Association of Nigeria pledged to engage youth in forest restoration. In closing, the Governor urged residents to plant subsidized seedlings and build a sustainable green economy. “Every tree we plant today secures our environment, economy, and children’s future,” he said.
