ONC Appeals for Urgent Flood Preparedness in Rivers’ Orashi Region

ONC Appeals for Urgent Flood Preparedness in Rivers’ Orashi Region

The Orashi National Congress (ONC) President, Ambassador Emeni Ibe, has urged Rivers State and local government authorities in the Orashi area to act now on the 2026 flood warning. Highlighting that over 30,000 communities nationwide face high flood risk, he stressed early measures—clearing drains, setting up evacuation centres, and stocking relief supplies—are vital to protect lives and property. He called on NEMA and state agencies to intensify public awareness and pre-position relief materials ahead of peak flooding. While praising the federal government’s commitment to emergency response, he warned that real impact depends on swift action at the grassroots level.

Absolutely. Communities can organise sandbagging, stock up emergency supplies, and designate safe zones for families and farmland.

Honestly, asking about specific flood plans is wise. Doubt local groups will follow through fully though.

Early warnings like this have sounded before, yet infrastructure remains weak and many affected areas still need real evacuation plans.

Urgent appeals are fine, but demands alone won't help if state authorities don't allocate budgets or commit resources before the floods arrive.

Communities should map high-risk zones now and stock essentials such as clean water, medicine, and nonperishable food before the rainy season peaks.
