Academy Alleges Irregularities in Paul Onuachu’s Transfer to Europe

Academy Alleges Irregularities in Paul Onuachu’s Transfer to Europe

Questions have arisen over how Paul Onuachu moved from a Togolese development academy to Europe without proper clearance. Veteran journalist Segun Adenuga says he discovered Onuachu in a 2008 Lagos street football competition and arranged for him to join Liberty Sports Academy in Togo. The striker was meant to complete a 24-month programme but left after 21 months. Neither Adenuga nor the academy director, who wrote a protest letter in November 2021, has been able to contact Onuachu since. They claim the player’s International Transfer Certificate was issued without records from the Nigeria Football Federation. Under FIFA rules, training clubs must be compensated. Observers say this case highlights wider concerns over undocumented transfers of young African talents.

How did Onuachu's transfer clear without formal approval from his Togolese academy or football authorities back in 2008?

You're right, that process seems odd given no record of academy sign-off in Togolese files.

Was there any record of paperwork from Togo's academy or local federation for that move?

It seems odd that a player scouted in a Lagos street competition would move to Europe without documented clearance from his academy.

While alleged irregularities are concerning, perhaps Adenuga's personal intervention simply sped up clearance for a standout talent.

Academies and clubs should establish transparent transfer protocols and conduct regular audits to avoid disputes over future clearances.
